Generational Curses: How they Destroy Your Children

Updated: May 31

Parents, guardians and care givers alike all share the common responsibility to help in the upbringing of a child/ren. They are to teach the child how to conduct themselves within society, show them key behaviors for their survival like how to cook, and through their own moral judgement, choose to enhance this child's life. Unfortunately for some, we don't ever get that enhancement and we repeat cycles of poor behavior and trauma induced responses when we have children of our own.

Generational curses come in many forms from emotional damage to financial hinderances. One common type of generational curse is not leaving behind an inheritance to aide your family out of poverty. Statistics show the disparities among race and wealth which outline how individuals of color (Black and Hispanic) are at a disadvantage overall. Urban.org states that "In 2022, white families had about $260,000 more in average retirement savings than both Black and Hispanic families and about $20,000 more than Asian families." Other information found was that "In 2022, white families were nearly four times more likely to receive an inheritance than Black families and about five times more likely than Hispanic families." as well as "More than half of white households (57 percent) and more than one-third of Black households and Hispanic households (38 and 35 percent, respectively) had this level of emergency savings, compared with nearly three-quarters of Asian households (72 percent). These findings suggest the vast majority of Black and Hispanic households could face hardship because of common financial emergencies". This data is staggering as it shows the potential economic dangers our children could potentially face if we don't break the curse of poor financial planning.

To add, curses like exposure to domestic violence typically result in a slew of adverse consequences. The National Library of Medicine reports that "Men who witness intimate partner violence in childhood are more likely to commit such acts in adulthood"; "In the United States, at least half a million women are victims of intimate partner violence annually"; "Women assaulted by an intimate partner experience significant health consequences including injury, chronic pain, gastrointestinal problems, sexually transmitted infections, depression, suicidality, post-traumatic stress disorder, and death". Furthermore, children are effected by witnessing this type of abuse by becoming anxious, engaging in aggressive behaviors, and develop headaches or stomach pain from the internal tension they feel from their home environment.

Overall, generational curses are malignant to the family structure. As parents, guardians and care givers we must do out part to end the cycle in order to give our children the promising future they deserve!
